Joey Mott ’19

Joseph “Joey” Mott grew up in Cleveland, South Carolina, just north of Greenville. Joey enrolled at Clemson as a genetics major in hopes of attending dental school one day. As he was exposed to other areas of study, he realized that he could make a positive impact on the community in ways besides dentistry. Joey graduated from Clemson University in May of 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. As a student, he was involved in numerous extracurricular activities such as Undergraduate Student Government, Spiro Entrepreneurial, and Marketing Student Advisory Boards. He also interned in the Office of Corporate Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives and Governmental Affairs his senior year of college where he interfaced with economic development leaders to strategically grow Clemson’s corporate and government partners.

After graduation, Joey moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked at a campaign and marketing firm. He joined the Baltimore/Washington Club soon after where he began to foster relationships with students and professors back on campus. After a stent in D.C., he returned home to work at South Carolina Biotechnology Industry Organization, where he assisted in the recruitment and retention of life science companies through advocacy efforts and legislative support. Joey felt a call back into public service, which led him to begin working for Congressman Ralph Norman who represents South Carolina’s Fifth Congressional District. He served as a liaison to constituent groups – including municipalities, trade associations, economic development entities and private businesses. Joey always felt a calling back to Washington, D.C., and when the opportunity arose to join the Congressman’s DC team, he leapt at the opportunity. Serving in various roles, he was most recently promoted to Deputy Chief. In this capacity, Joey supervises daily operations of the office, including scheduling, and constituent responses and serves as a liaison with key South Carolina stakeholders. He also oversees a legislative portfolio that includes agriculture, education, and energy polices.

Joey is passionate about serving others by volunteering at his church in Washington, D.C., National Community Church. In his free time, Joey enjoys spending time with his friends cheering on the Clemson Tigers!
